New Features

  • Creators can now specify a custom order for sessions in a folder. Using an easy drag and drop interface, you can choose the order that all the sessions in a folder should appear. This is perfect for creating a curriculum or set of training videos that should be watched in order. And when a viewer finishes watching one of these sessions, the player will suggest the next one in the list. Click here to learn more

  • Creators can now schedule the publishing of sessions. This is great for releasing sessions along with a big announcement, or removing them after a semester is over. You can also make it so each session in a folder needs to be made available manually before viewers can see them - allowing you to edit or approve your sessions before being published. Click here to learn more

  • We now have an API for programmatic uploading of videos into the Panopto VCMS. This REST based API can be used for tasks like automating production workflows or importing a back catalog of video stored in another system.

  • Improved Canvas integration:

    • Instructors can now embed a panopto video into any course document directly from the Canvas editor. Click here to learn more

    • Administrators can define how user roles are mapped between Canvas and Panopto

    • New logout feature allows you to configure your site so that when users log out of Canvas they will be logged out of Panopto as well

New Recorder Features

The 4.6.1 recorder clients will be released in the next few weeks

  • The Remote Recorder will now start uploading a session as it is being recorded, instead of waiting until the recording is finished

  • There is now a version of the Windows Recorder that can be run off of an external drive without being installed on the host machine. Click here to learn more

Video Content Management System:

  • You now choose which roles  can make content public on your site (Administrators, Creators, or nobody) with the new setting 'Users Can Make Content Public"'

  • Fixed an issue relating to certain very large recordings made with Mac or iOS recorders

  • Fixed an issue that prevented some Mac recordings from getting thumbnails

  • Fixed an issue that would prevent scrolling the timeline in the editor after performing a Save As operation

  • Improved group membership syncing for SAML integrations

  • If an uploaded video fails to process, that error is now shown as the status for that session

  • Clicking on a folder name in search results will now navigate to that folder

  • Fixed minor issues related to layout and display in the sharing window

  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes prevent users from dismissing a user alert

  • Improved the layout of user alerts to better display long alert messages

  • Users can now correctly work with Dropbox content in the editor

  • Subfolders can now have the same name as long as they are in different parent folders

  • The session list now defaults to the thumbnail view for all users, if you change views the system will remember your preference

  • Panopto now remembers which sort you've chosen for each individual folder in the system

  • Sessions and folders now have a Search tab for managing Smart Search and search index processing

  • When sharing a session with the Internet or All Users of your site, the option to send an email notification is disabled

  • Fixed an issue which prevented sharing a session or folder in Internet Explorer 9

  • Fixed an issue that would cause the last login time for users to display in the incorrect time zone

  • Improved the reliability of loading the usage page for a server

  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes prevent deleting a folder

  • Downloaded CSV viewing statistics files now show sub-minute precision for viewing time

  • Panopto now includes localized text for Chinese (Traditional)

Interactive Video Player:

  • Improved the layout of the session player for non-standard screen resolutions

  • Removed the "Contributors" section from the session player

  • Fixed issues with the animations and behavior of the thumbnail timeline and table of contents in the player

  • The player now remembers the volume level used when watching a previous session

  • The player now defaults to 100% volume

  • Improved which source is shown by default in the session player

  • Fixed an issue that would sometime prevent showing and hiding the thumbnail timeline in the session player

Thanks Graham! I feel like we've discussed locking down making stuff public and also some workflows like scheduling items to be available in a certain date window. We'd love to hear what you think as you have tried these out!

Is the ability to scheduled and release in a window available via the API?

Hi Mark,

That's not currently available in the API. We've filed item# 18986 - Add ability to API to scheduled and release in an availability window

Hi Dave,

The reason I ask is that we're getting a lot of our lecturers now who want to control release of their recordings & having the ability for a check box on our booking form would allow us the option to not not make scheduled recordings available immediately (without having to jump through convoluted 'holding folder' workflows).

Does the time default to anything? For example "delay for 1 hour" so it's automatic, but gives you a chance to get to the office and edit it. Or is it manual each time?

Hi Graham. Not at present, instead you set a date and time you want all the sessions to become available. I've posted a feature request for delaying instead and it's already "planned", but votes would probably help. It's here:

Might be a good idea to add "IE9 and below no longer supported for sitewide-SSL" to this (or 4.6, we jumped straight to 4.6.1 from 4.5), as it's caused us some problems today.

Hey Steve,

Since we're looking at upgrading from 4.5 to 4.6.1 within the next few weeks this will affect us too- can you please elaborate a little more on what IE 9 users are experiencing? Any ideas why site-wide SSL is breaking? I am aware that if you are still using MMS for the Panopto Viewer, that is still not over HTTPS.

Hi Brent,

This seems to be intentional - when an IE9 users tries to access a recording they receive a the message "It looks like your browser isn't secure enough to play this content” and then links to I'm not sure if all users get that web link - I hope not as it mentions administrative settings which won't be helpful to them at all.

Sorry but I don't know what MMS is or what the alternative would be, so grateful for any clarification you can give on that. Steve

MMS is the previous streaming technology that we're still using on our system because it's the only way to get the Variable Speed Playback feature, because MMS is inherently an insecure protocol the Panopto Viewer still runs over HTTPS (the rest of the web UI runs over HTTPS). When Smoothstream is turned on in the settings "SmoothStreamEnabled=true" it runs the viewer over HTTPS and uses adaptive bitrate streaming, but the VSP functions are not available. Dave and team: any ideas when VSP will be available with SmoothStream turned on?

Ah, that might be it then. Thanks for the info. We need VSP so don't use SmoothStream, like yourselves. I'm not holding my breath for VSP on SS as I think it depends on Microsoft so it looks like we can have IE9 or VSP, but not both. I think I'll stick with the latter. It's not going to be a problem from August as we're upgrading IE then, but if we'd upgraded during term time then we would have had lots of support queries about this, and in my opinion it's generally just good practice to notify users when you drop support for a browser.
